RESPONDING IN TIMES OF CRISIS
Standing With Communities When It Matters Most
In times of emergency and disaster, Inter-Mission India works with the local community to aid those affected through rescue, relief, and rehabilitation. Many lives have been rebuilt and restored through IMI’s disaster relief initiatives.
Tsunami 2004
On 26 December 2004, the Indian Ocean Tsunami devastated 14 countries. IMI stepped in alongside local partners to provide relief in the worst-affected areas of Karaikal, Yelamanchilly, and Port Blair. Post-tsunami, IMI started three new Children’s Homes for tsunami-affected children. Many of these children have since excelled in their studies and are now working in good jobs.
Chennai Floods 2015
In December 2015, Chennai and its surrounding areas were devastated by flash floods, killing 500+ people and displacing 1.8 million. IMI provided sustainable relief to the Manali community in North Chennai, supplying provisions, utensils, sleeping mats, and essentials to daily-wage labourers who had suffered total loss.
